The 2016 CQHA Annual General Meeting was held in conjunction with the 34th Annual Horse Owners Conference, January 15-17th, 2016, which featured internationally recognized speakers on a wide range of topics of interest to horse owners, breeders and professionals, and a trade show of over 50 equine businesses and organizations. The meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Sheraton Conference Centre, 3310 - 50th Avenue, in Red Deer, Alberta.

Haidee Landry, CQHA President, welcomed 26 members and 9 guests and called the meeting to order at 5:15 PM confirming that a quorum of the CQHA membership was present. Haidee thanked the North American Equine Ranching Information Council, for generously stepping up to the plate as the GOLD Corporate Sponsor of CQHA's participation at this conference, including hosting our display booth at the trade show, and hosting the AGM meeting room and meeting refreshments.

Haidee introduced the nine CQHA Directors present and the 2016 YWC Team Canada Coach and Manager. Past President, Marnie Somers introduced special guests, AQHA Executive Committee member Stan Weaver and his wife Nancy and welcomed them to Canada and our AGM. Haidee then introduced the keynote speaker, AQHA Executive Vice President, Craig Huffhines.

Craig provided an overview of the state of the Quarter Horse industry and, along with Stan Weaver, answered questions posed by the meeting attendees. Haidee presented Craig and Stan with tokens of our appreciation for participating in this year’s AGM. Craig and Stan presented Haidee with a plaque in appreciation of our partnership on the occasion of the AQHA’s 75th Anniversary year.

Stan was asked to pull the winning entry from our trade show booth draw for a CQHA Notepad. The winner was Brenda Mitchell.

Haidee provided a brief overview of the history of CQHA and the CQHA mandate. The members passed a motion to appoint Haidee as the Chair and Marnie as the Secretary for this meeting.

The members passed motions to approve the AGM meeting agenda and to adopt the draft 2015 AGM minutes as printed and circulated.

Haidee presented a report on the association’s objectives met in 2015; a report on the advances made by Equine Canada; the makeup of the 2016 Canadian Youth World Cup Team; and acknowledged the passing of the late Sheldon Soderberg, a former CQHA/AQHA Director.

Treasurer, Steve Schiestel, presented the unaudited 2015 CQHA financial statements for 2015 and advised that the association’s 2014 Financial Review report was available at this meeting. The members passed a motion to receive Steve's report as information.

The members passed a motion to appoint Michael Hunter, CA, of Regent St., Amherst, NS as accountant to perform the 2015 financial review engagement.

Haidee advised that nine CQHA director’s terms expired at the end of 2015 and presented two nominations from the Committee for the identified vacancies: for three year terms: Ross Brigden (AB); Marnie Somers (MB); Joe Carter (ON); Steve Schiestel (AB); Christian Beauchemin (QC); Greg Little (MB); Larry Clifford (MB): Wayne Burwash (AB); John Perkins (Maritimes) and Susan Chestnut (Maritimes); two new AQHA Directors that had accepted an appointment to the board for 2 year terms; Lorne Winther (AB) and Melanie Burns (SK) and that one former Director had decided not to stand for re-election. Myrna Anderson of Rumsey, AB and Mary Ellen Robinson of Calgary, AB, were nominated from the floor and each gave a brief overview of their involvement in the Canadian horse industry. The members passed a motion to accept all the foregoing nominations to the Board of Directors as duly nominated and elected.

The members passed a motion that the CQHA Board of Directors determine the date and venue for the 2017 CQHA AGM at a subsequent Board meeting.

Haidee welcomed YWC Team Canada Coach, Christine Little, and YWC Team Canada Manager, Donna Sagin to the podium to speak about the Team, their plans and fundraising goals.

Wayne Burwash presented an update on the Shannon Burwash Memorial Scholarship Award for students pursuing post-secondary Equine and Agricultural studies, and identified the two inaugural 2015 recipients.

The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
