Kathy Patterson started riding Quarter Horses as a young girl sorting cattle on the family farm. Today she and her husband Dan own and operate Twin Bells Ranch in Bornholm, Ontario. The facility offers lessons, training and boarding featuring both indoor and outdoor arenas and all the equipment necessary for training both the horse and rider.  Kathy has been Youth Advisor and active board member of the Ontario Quarter Horse Association for many years. In 2004 she received the Ontario Equestrian Federation “People Make a Difference Award” and in 2008 was the recipient of the “AQHA Most Valuable Professional” from her affiliate. She was inducted into the OQHA Hall of Fame in 2013. Kathy is the AQHA Director for Ontario and has served on the AQHA Youth Committee since 2004.

Kathy and Dan have a daughter Megan who resides in Wetaskiwin Alberta.

Mary Ellen was born and raised and presently resides on her family’s heritage ranch originally established in 1888.

She was a Registered Nurse for 25 years. Mary Ellen has a very diverse equine background including Guide Outfitting, Trail Riding, Rodeo, Animal Health, & Equine Business Management. Presently she runs a cattle ranch in the foothills west of Calgary and a first classed equestrian center. There she boards & trains over 70 horses. At the stable, she has a full time instructor trainer and welcomes English and Western disciplines.  Moose Hill Ranch Equestrian Centre was awarded the 2018 Alberta Equestrian Federation Stable/Facility of the Year. The centre is actively busy with Lessons, Clinics, Seminars and holds many Community Events. Mary Ellen is presently Treasurer of CQHA and a Director of AQHA.

Tara has had the privilege to be the Past President of the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) and of the Alberta Equestrian Federation (AEF), as well as the opportunity to represent Canada as Runner-Up Miss Rodeo Canada 1998. She has served on the Equine Canada Board of Directors as a representative to recreation, and on the Strathcona County Economic Development and Advisory Committee as the agricultural representative. It has been an honor for Tara to receive both the CHA Clinic Instructor of the year (2006), and Volunteer of the year (2013) awards.

She is an American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) designated Professional Horseman and was appointed to the AQHA Youth Activities Committee in 2012, where she is able to contribute to her vision of helping the industry to work collaboratively to strengthen it. Tara has worked with the BC Quarter Horse Association (BCQHA)  as a former AQHA Director and youth advisor. She is a current CHA Clinic Certifier, which affords her the opportunity to certify instructors in the US and Canada. Her education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from the University of Alberta.

With over twenty nine years of industry teaching experience and a background in both western and english, Tara offers riding lessons to people of all ages and skill levels in hopes to advance their horsemanship skills and knowledge. In addition, she judges various horsemanship competitions, presents seminars and instructs clinics. She has been fortunate to work with many equine professionals on the provincial, national and international levels which has greatly enriched her experiences.

Professionally, I am a semi-retired equine veterinarian, who has practiced for 50 years, owned and operated an exclusive equine practice in the Calgary, Alberta area with up to 7 veterinarians for 37 years. The specialty of the practice was equine reproduction. In addition to private practice, I have been a FEI internationally accredited veterinarian for over 40 years and served in numerous capacities in North America including President of the Veterinary Commission at Spruce Meadows for over 30 years. 

As far as my involvement in the horse industry, I have raised and shown Quarter Horses since 1970 with many Provincial, National and AQHA Championships. The highlights of my breeding program include one Reserve World Championship and two Canadian National Super Horses.  I am currently a director and the Past-President of the Canadian Quarter Horse Association; a director of the American Quarter Horse Association; and a director of the Quarter Horse Association of Alberta. I have been a member of the Equestrian Canada for over 30 years and served in many capacities including currently on the board of directors. 

Recreationally, in addition to horse shows, my biggest loves are playing hockey and participating in activities with my family and grandkids.

Peggy Blackwell is our representative from Atlantic Canada, representing the Maritime Provinces. Peggy is a new addition to the CQHA board bringing with her many years of volunteer experience centred around horses.  She has spent several years on the board of a local horse show circuit, assisted with therapeutic riding, acted as a board member for the Maritime Quarter Horse Association (MQHA) on the fund raising committee, and for the past two years as the President of the MQHA.  Her most treasured role though has been as show mom for her daughter Laura.  Peggy saw the value of Laura’s relationship with horses and horse people to be extremely rewarding and a positive influence on her daughter.

Ryan A. Fleetwood is a fourth generation southern Alberta rancher and horse breeder.  Ryan raises a versatility Quarter Horse based on the strengths and weaknesses of the stallion and the mare, and the heritable, consistent traits of the ancestors.  Ryan is an AQHA Professional Horseman and has been raising Quarter Horses for over 25 years now, and has been involved with the CQHA for 6 years.

Marc Garner

Marc was raised on a ranch in the SW corner of Alberta next to Waterton Lakes National Park. By the time he was 15, he was the main horse trainer for his parents respectable quarter horse herd with genetics centered around bloodlines like Grey Badger 2, King, and Two Eyed Jack. His immediate family consists of his wife Susanne, his oldest son Colton and his wife Shaelynn and their daughter Paisley, plus his youngest son Graydon and Graydon's wife Jenna. Aside from being a director CQHA, Marc continues to train and shoe horses, help neighbours with cattle work and often takes people riding in the beautiful Rocky Mountains where he grew up. Marc is proud to ride his own brand and although he is often seen riding one of his blue horses, his favourite saying is "There is no such thing as a bad color on a good horse."

Laurie was raised in the Quarter Horse Industry. Showing extensively as a youth and moving up through the ranks serving on the board and executive of her provincial youth association. After university she served on the board of her provincial association in the role of promotion and publicity director, developing promotional programs, attending trade shows and touring elementary schools with horses in toe for the Take a Horse to School program.

She is a graduate of AQHA's Leadership program and a past Director at Large of Equestrian Canada. She was selected by the Equestrian Canada Health and Welfare Committee to represent the Quarter Horse population in Canada on the Code Stakeholders Development Committee for the 2013 government revision of the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Equines.

A published writer and photographer she has enjoyed a successful career as an Equine Photographer, being named by Western Horse Review in their Equine Photography special issue as one of the top photographers in North America.

In her spare time she enjoys creative projects and being a spokes person for Endometriosis awareness.  Laurie is happy to be returning to the CQHA board after a six year absence.

Gayle Pawley-Wilson is originally from Burlington, ON, and has been a part of the Canadian Horse Industry for as long as she can remember.  Her father started breeding American Quarter Horses in the early 1960s, and Gayle’s youth years were spent training, showing, instructing beginner horsemanship and helping with the family’s horse business. 

From 1958 – 1971, she showed American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Youth, including reining, western riding, equitation, and western pleasure and competed in shows sponsored by the Western Horse Association of Ontario and the Ontario Girls Barrel Racing Association. She was the second runner up in the Miss Quarterama Queen contest in 1971.  Gayle obtained her RN (Registered Nurse) degree in 1971, and in 1973 she moved to British Columbia and began working with Canadian Pacific Airlines (later Air Canada), and worked with them for 27.5 years.  From these positions she gained valuable experience in management, safety, disaster training, teamwork, time management, reporting, customer relations, and first aid emergency training.  1978 found Gayle raising foals and subsequently back to the AQHA shows. In 1984 she purchased and built with her partner, Springfield Farm in Langley, B.C.  She brought her Stallion, Sir Poco Dundee, from Ontario and expanded the broodmare herd.  During this time, she began to give back some of to the Industry by becoming involved with the Associations in BC and Canada. 

Gayle has held the following positions:  An AQHA Director from 1998 – Present, AQHA Region One Director, and on the AQHA Amateur and Recreation committees.  For the Canadian Quarter Horse Association (CQHA), she has been a Director since 2001, and was the Recording Secretary from 2001-2012.  Currently she is the CQHA Grant committee chair and has been since 2017.  She has also been with the British Columbia Quarter Horse Association (BCQHA) as Director and Recording Secretary, show manager including whipper-in and ring steward, and was involved in the organization’s restructuring in 1986 and again in 2000 along with assisting in development of their constitution.  She worked with Horse Council of British Columbia (HCBC) as a Breed Director, Horse Improvement Director, Short Course Director, and has been integrally involved with them and their onset of western and reining coaching programs in addition to the previous restructuring of the programs associated with the former Canadian Equestrian Federation (CEF).

Her past involvement includes involvement with Equestrian Canada as a Director at Large from 2004-2008, sitting on the task force for horse identification in Canada along with assisting with their constitution. 

In 1998, Gayle married Keith Wilson and became a loving stepmother to Maverick and Sky.  Keith and Gayle own and manage Agile Transformational, LLC in Venice, Florida.  They share their acreage with 2 AQHA mares, 2 German Shepherds, 1 Mini Aussie Shepherd, and 1 cat.   Gayle believes that we should have knowledge of our past while moving towards the visions of tomorrow. She likes to continue to approach situations with facts, diplomacy, input from core stakeholders and consideration for all members of the Horse Industry.

Donna Sagin

Donna Sagin

Donna Sagin is the Senior Marketing Manager with Xplornet Enterprise Solutions, a national telecommunications company. An experienced executive member, she currently volunteers as a Director for the Manitoba Quarter Horse Association and the Manitoba Association of Agricultural Societies. Bringing strong leadership qualifications and recognized as a hands-on, dedicated problem-solver, Donna is committed to developing activities and rural communities to keep them growing.

Working the majority of her career with non-profit organizations in Western Canada, Donna has worked with volunteers and staff to organize and host small events of 200 to large events of over 100,000 visitors. Growing up in an equine ranching family, Donna has been an avid AQHA amateur exhibitor for over 20 years in the AQHA all-around events as well as barrel racing, rodeos and hunter-jumper events. In 2016, Donna was the Team Manager for Team Canada at the AQHA Youth World Cup in Tamworth, Australia. In her spare time, she enjoys golf, travelling, and DIY renovation projects!
